Over

The Westerdijk family collection of African art was started by my parents

in the early 1960s. Heinrich Westerdijk (1916-2001)
and Susanna Westerdijk van der Vijver (1918-2009) changed from
collecting Asian art before the war to African art after. I(Peter)
joined them as a high-schooler, especially interested in African metal
products. After the death of his parents, he continued collecting African
art, focussing more and more on sculpture from the Congo. Recently, my
eldest son, Dirkjan, has stepped into the family tradition to become the
third generation of Westerdijks to collect African tribal items.
